To celebrate the Scarborough Cricket Festival, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation hosted the inaugural Beach Cricket Tournament on South Bay Beach in front of the iconic Scarborough Spa with 6 under 11 junior cricket teams taking part in the event over 2 days. Flicx UK loaned the YCF a new 2G Flicx Skills pitch for the duration of the competition.
Wednesday 13th August saw Wykeham take on Snainton & Hesleton, with play scheduled to start at 10am. However, after an extraordinarily high tide caused by a ‘super moon’, play was delayed to allow the tide out enough to get play under way. Luckily enough, the 2G Flicx pitch drained exceptionally well and the match was able to get under way just 30 minutes late! After some excellent cricket, Whykham overcame their opponents to claim the victory.
Thursday 14th August brought together Scalby, Seamer, Duncombe Park and Flixton cricket clubs, all vying for triumph. Cloudy skies and the odd shower couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the participants; as the round robin tournament progressed Seamer and Flixton under 11s emerged as the 2 teams to beat and the final match of the afternoon saw the 2 meet in a winner takes all encounter that saw Seamer CC take the win in style and celebrate by running into the ocean!
The winners from each day and their coach were delighted to receive 2 pair of tickets each for next year’s test match between England and New Zealand at Headingley. All other competitors and their coaches received a pair of tickets to watch a Yorkshire match of their choosing in the 2015 season as well as the opportunity to come to Scarborough to watch day 1 of the Yorkshire v Sussex match.
The engagement and enthusiasm from all the participants made the tournament a massive success and we look forward to coming back next year with an even bigger and better event! said Nick Robinson Project Officer – Yorkshire Cricket Foundation… Thanks again for letting us use the pitch for the beach cricket tournament. It worked fantastically and was commented on by many of the coaches very positively.
