The new 2G Flicx Pitch is a great surface for Indoor Cricket (Case Study)

Winter Cricket Nets at school

With the Indoor Cricket season just around the corner, the new 2G Flicx Pitch has been trialled on a sprung floor with excellent results in addition to it already being used in indoor leagues on rubbercrumb surfaces (see our LCB blog).

The trial came about as a result of a partnership between Beth’s Grammar School and the Dartfordians Cricket Club under the stewardship of coach Mike Lanning, who is also an employee of one of our retailers Sports Directory UK. Feedback from the trial was excellent with the 2G Flicx Pitch solving the age old problem of finding a suitable playing surface for indoor cricket

2G Flicx Pitch Indoors

For most indoor cricket training and matches at the moment, an astro or fibre mat is used however this does have some problems including…

  • It doesn’t roll out flat straight away and can take ages to flatten to produce a flat, even surface
  • It needs to be taped to flatten it and stop any slipping
  • It’s heavy and cumbersome to move
  • It produces a low bounce on a sprung floor

Feedback from the Flicx 2G Pitch trial reported the following benefits …

  •  You can roll out the pitch then play instantly
  • It rolls flat without taping
  • It produces a very good consistent bounce
  • Can take seam and spin
  • It’s easy to store (requires very little space when kept on its end)
  • Can be produced with coloured tiles making coaching markings used to improve line and length bowling – take a look at our product range

Speaking about the trial Mike Lanning said

“It is really important for effective cricket coaching – especially for batting and bowling – that the training surface provides a consistent and good bounce. At our local sports hall we tried to use hard balls on a fibre mat laid on their sprung wooden floor, but it wasn’t successful as the ball didn’t bounce at all – it simply died on the surface.

Our trial of the new 2G Flicx mat dealt successfully with this problem – the bounce using hard balls was good and trustworthy, comparable to an outdoor surface for both seam and spin bowling. The 2G Flicx mat is now allowing us to train much more effectively in the hall with both colts and seniors; we can now, for example, use the bowling machine there for the first time.”

On behalf of Flicx UK, Managing Director Richard Beghin commented “The softer nature of the new 2G surface really lends itself to the indoor game and training within sportshalls. This will allow players of all ages and abilities to train throughout the winter on a pitch which produces a good consistent bounce and with our new designs – allows coaches to work on a bowlers line and length as well as a batters decision making”

Kate Costin, Flicx UK Marketing Manager added ” Although we are still in the initial stages of trailing the 2G pitch for indoor cricket, we are very excited about the early results. With the new 2G showing that it is a surface that has overcome the key historical issues of good consistent bounce and ease of storage and use ( no need to wait for the pitch to flatten out) it makes a great platform for the indoor game. We are now looking to hear from more clubs and schools that might be able to further assist in evaluating the pitch”
