Yorkshire Cricket Foundation Beach Cricket festival is “fun in the sun”

Yorkshire Cricket Foundation Beach Cricket

Flicx UK loaned a 2G Flicx skills pitch to the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation for the second year in a row to support their Beach Cricket Festival. 9 teams took part in the summer extravaganza on Scarborough Beach and organiser Nick Robinson was quietly thrilled by the tournament: “We’d like to grow it to the point of having another pitch – we had lots of interest from people on the beach asking if their son could join in, and we had plenty of clubs who didn’t register in time. We want to raise the profile of Yorkshire cricket, but the biggest emphasis is on having a good time.”

The tournament, now in its second year has been a very successful addition to the iconic Scarborough Cricket festival. The primary aim, to give children from local communities and beyond, the opportunity to play a round robin cricket competition by the sea, followed by the chance to watch their heroes play at Scarborough later in the week.

The guardian newspaper picked up on the story with the great slant on how this innovative form of the game could be developed further by the ECB says new chief executive Tom Harrison “We are looking at more informal ways of playing cricket, for example beach cricket during the summer holidays, backyard cricket (if you are lucky enough to have one), cricket in the street, car park, whatever,” Harrison says. “The idea is to strip the idea of privilege and get cricket back to a bat and ball. If we connect in this way then our very multicultural society has more chance of connecting with the game.

“It needs more fleshing out but we are working with Chance to Shine to make this something more than another ECB campaign and more of a philosophy of how we want to pitch the game to a far broader audience.”

Beach cricket is another string to the bow of the 2G Flicx Pitch which is carving a reputation for being the most versatile cricket pitch on the market. “Its low maintenance, portable, roll out roll up nature means that its perfect for taking cricket to places it has never been played before says Flicx UK’s marketing manager Kate Costin.
